I started my list building efforts in May of 2008 and I am writing this post August 19th 2008. I created my free ebook give-away “Get The TRUTH!” and joined 5 give-away events. Only 1 or 2 accepted because I didn’t create the proper direct download links. The direct download links are for those that joined the give-away events and upgrade. My results were much less than I had hoped but an interesting thing has happened. Even after the events ended, I continue to get new sign ups. I joined these 1-2 events successfully and have 49 new members on my list. Now I know this doesn’t sound like much but I am surprised that my list contimues to grow with no additional effort on my part.

So why should you care about these dismal results? I’ll tell you why I care. These events work. There are new give-away events being launched every week. I am going to start joining as many as I can. If 1-2 events bring me 50 new members on my list and I join 1 event per week, my list will grow substantially over the next few months. As I mentioned in an earlier post, list building takes time.

Let’s look at the numbers. If I successfully join 25 new give away events over the next few months, I could be looking at close to 1000 new members on my list. This is assuming that I can only get the same results that I did in the previous attempts. What happens if I do a better job with a new give-away product. What if I repackage “Get The TRUTH!” it and make it better. Perhaps my list will grow to 2000 or maybe 3000. What gets me excited about this is the fact that it works. I put in some hard work initially then sat back and watched.

If you want to be successful in an online home based business, you must build an email list of prospects interested in your product. This is not easy and will take time to build. One of the easiest ways to build a list is to give something away for free to your website visitors. Create a report, how to or ebook on the subject matter you plan to sell. Show your prospects that you are an expert in this field by giving this report or ebook away to them for free. To build your list however, you will need to gather their email address in return for this free gift. Create a compelling page (squeeze page) that allows them to input their name and email address. Now that you are building your list by providing quality content for free, you may begin offering paid products that provide more in depth information.

Deciding what you are going to sell is the first stumbling block most new internet marketers run in to. You know you want to start your own home based business online but you’re not sure what to sell. Take my advise and sell something you are passionate about. Your customers will appreciate your enthusiasm and expertise and they will come back for more. People want to know what you know and they will pay you for it. If your expertise lies in something that you think is not marketable, then you will need to look for something you have a strong interest in and learn everything you can about that subject. Your success depends on the quality of your product so do not short cut this step.

Getting started in your own home based business may be easier than you think. However, making money may not be. There is so much information out there that it can be confusing and overwhelming. It really doesn’t have to be so hard. There are basic steps that need to be taken to ensure your success online. Here is a basic outline to get you started.

1. Decide what it is you want to sell.

2. Register a domain name.

3. Get a hosting account set up.

4. Create or find a product to give away for free.

5. Create your website with great content and include the free offer.

6. Market and drive traffic to your website.

7. Build your list with the free offer using an email form on your site.

8. Market and sell valuable products of interest to your list .

9. Collect your paychecks!

This may sound too simple to be true but it isn’t.

First, it will take commitment on your part to follow through and be diligent in your efforts. It takes time to start seeing the results.

Second, this is the easiest way for the average person to start an online home based business and be successful.

Third, “The money is in the list”. If you build a quality list and continue to do so, you will have created the potential for a lifetime of income.
